The 2021 WEEF/GEDC was held in Madrid, Spain and online on November 15 to 18 in 2021. The theme this year was “Diversity and Ethics in Education for an Inclusive and Sustainable World” and with all the diverse attendees joining the conference in person and virtually, it was an incredible step in the direction of crafting such a world together. The International Federation of Engineering Education Societies and the Global Engineering Deans Council along with Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia were proud to host an integration of Academia, Industry, Social Institutions, Associations and Students.
Following a hybrid model, which utilized both face-to-face and online integration, enabled us to allow participants from all over the world to choose the way they wanted to join based on their level of accessibility and comfort. All four days of the conference were filled with endless conversation, inspiring Keynote speeches, new introductions along with old friends during in-person and virtual coffee breaks, scintillating industry panels, and wonderous sponsor exhibits. The award ceremony included: the Duncan Fraser Award, the GEDC Diversity Award, the very first Lueny Morrell Award, and the global student hackathon. (For more information on these awards and the winners please visit ifees.net and gedcouncil.org.) There were also fascinating round tables, entertaining workshops, engaging cultural programs, and even a student hackathon that left the hardest decision of participating in the conference to be picking what to go to. With all the complexities these past few years have brought us, being able to come together, whether it be virtually or physically, has proven invaluable in our global engineering education community.
We would like to express our profound gratitude to our conference sponsors: Siemens, Dassault Systemes, Coursera, MathWorks, Quanser, ABET, Arçelik, CTI, UNESCO, and UC Davis without whom, the conference would not have been possible. We would also like to thank our workshops sponsors: Altair, Infineon, and Labs Land, as well as our conference collaborators for their invaluable support during our hybrid conference.
