About UP EBIT

As South Africa prepares for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology(EBIT), focuses its research, teaching and learning activities on bringing competitive knowledge to industry, education, and society. EBIT is highly ranked globally; our programmes are accredited by statutory and professional bodies at both national and international levels.

About the Representative

Lelanie Smith

Lelanie Smith is full-time senior lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and IT (EBIT) at the University of Pretoria (UP), South Africa. Currently her main responsibilities are coordinating the Community Engagement Projects for the Faculty as well as the Vertically Integrated Projects. In addition she is the principle investigator on the cross institutional project “Bringing life to our Engineering Curricula in South Africa as well as the Chair for the Curriculum Transformation Committee in EBIT.

She has conducted research and work in the field of aircraft design, applied aerodynamics, computational modelling (coding and application), and optimisation, and has experience in supervising and teaching at University of Pretoria. She currently has ongoing collaborations with Cranfield University (UK) with projects focused on airframe propulsion integration.

She has also created and managed multiple local and international collaborative projects successfully. In collaboration with local industry, she is the local team leader for the international group (Team AREND) involved in coming up with innovative solution to curb the African crisis of poaching, specifically focusing on rhino poaching in the Kruger National Park. In 2017, she received the EBIT Faculty Teaching and Learning Award for the structure she developed for an engineering design education project (Team AREND).

She is pursuing her interest in Engineering Education specifically focused on integrative experiential learning and what we need from future engineering graduates.
